King James for Kids

A parishioner went to her pastor complaining about Bible reading.  She said all was fine until she came up to the part that contained the genealogy list.  Her question was, ”Would it be alright to just skip those chapters?”  The minister replied, “I wouldn’t, for there is a great lesson to be learned from reading through all of those begats.”  “And what lesson is that?”  “Patience!”  Well, no matter what the Bible, genealogies can be tough sledding, but there is a new report out on what major version is the easiest to read – and to the surprise of many, the King James Version won.  Let me explain.  The world leader in grade-level reading determination is the Flesch-Kincaid research company.  They are used by both the public and private sector in everything (books, newspapers, magazines),  whoever needs to know what age their writing is at.  The F-K formula was applied to the NIV (New International Version), TEV (Today’s English Version), NAS (New American Standard),  NKJ (New King James) and KJV (King James Version).  The results?  The NIV (Grade 8.4), the TEV (Grade 7.2), the NAS (Grade 7.l1), the NKJ (6.9), and the KJV (Grade 5.8).  In every area: less letters per word, less syllables per word, less words per sentence, greater percentage of small words and smaller percentage of large words – the KJV finished first (the NIV last).  Flesch-Kincaid concluded, “If any of the five major versions can boast about ease of readability, it is the King James.”

The bottom line?  So much for the excuse heard over and over again – the KJV is just too hard to understand!
