A salesman was driving in the country when he noticed a young boy standing by the side of a barn. On the wall were six circled targets with an arrow in each bulls-eye. Amazed, the fella stopped his car, walked across the field, and asked the kid how he was able to hit the exact center each time. The youngster replied, “Well mister, I lick my finger, take an arrow, straighten the feathers, pull back the bow, and resting everything against my chin, I aim and fire. Then, wherever the arrow hits, I draw the bulls-eye around it!”
In I Kings 22, we have the account of Israel and Syria going to battle. When King Benhadad of Damascus gathered his captains together, he instructed them to tell the troops to aim their arrows only at the Jerusalem monarch, King Ahab. The reason for such advice? Because if they do this, the rest of his Jewish army will turn and run. And the scriptural lesson for us? The devil’s not after the follower, he’s after the leader. The Bible says in I Kings 22:31, But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had rule over his chariots, saying, Fight neither with small nor great, save only with the king of Israel. For instance, this is why in the home the devil’s not after the mother or the children as much as he is the father – because if he can take dad down he’ll take the rest of the family down with him. Same in the church. The devil’s not after the member or deacon as much as he is after the pastor – because if he can take the preacher down, he’ll take the rest of the congregation down with him.
What a tragedy. The good and godly witness this family had and would’ve had for years and generations to come is now over. And although it just involves one family member, the world sees them all as hypocrites and so completely rejects anything they say about the Lord.
The bottom line? A professional archer will tell you that if you’re going to hit the bulls-eye of the target, the key is to aim higher (because gravity will lower the arrow’s trajectory). And so when the devil decided to take down the Duggar family, he didn’t aim low (Josie, Jordyn, Jennifer, Johannah, Jackson, Justin, James, Jason, Jeremiah, Jedidiah, Joy, Josiah, Joseph, Jinger, Jessa, Jill, Janna, Jessa), he aimed high (Joshua) and got them. As the Bible says in Zechariah 13:7, Smite the shepherd and the sheep will scatter. So let all husbands, fathers, pastors, deacons, teachers – and first-borns take note.
