THE BIBLE, BOOK OR LIBRARY?

A man was doing a research paper on suicide. He visited the library and asked the person behind the counter for books on the subject and was directed to a a certain aisle. However, the fella soon returned to the front desk and said the entire shelf was empty. The librarian commented, “That’s right, people who take those books out never do bring them back.” Today, there are skeptics trying to kill off the truthfulness of the Bible by comparing it to a library. They say that just as there are two types of books in a library (fiction and non-fiction), so too there are two kinds of books in the Bible (fiction and non-fiction). In particular, the Genesis book (creation) and Gospel books (Christ) are not to be taken as factual, but fictional.

So what is the Bible? A book or a library. The answer is both. On the one hand a library: 40 different authors writing 66 individual books over a period of 1,500 years with each booklet having its own literary style and theological emphasis. However, on the other hand it’s a book: for over those 1,500 years, all 40 different authors in their 66 individual books freely quote from one another, perfectly mesh with each other, and ultimately all write on the same topic, Jesus Christ.

The bottom line? Long ago the Lord warned about these fictional theological librarians in John 8:46,47 when he said – For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? ……
