One day the Library was lonely with no one in it for the librarian to help. These two chickens came through the door screeching “bouk bouk.” The librarian quickly got up and gave them each 5 books. The two chickens left satisfied. Just a few minutes later the same two chickens come through the door with no books screeching “bouk bouk.” The librarian once again jumps up and gives each chicken 15 books this time. The chickens leave satisfied once again. Then again for the third time the chickens return screeching “bouk bouk.” But this time being suspicious, the librarian gives each chicken only one book because they have still not returned the other books. As the chickens leave, the librarian slowly follows behind to see where all the books are going. The chickens come to a stop and start throwing the books into a pond where some frogs grab the books and throw them behind their back croaking “read-it read-it”
Chick-Fil-A is now the most successful fast-food company in the world. Based upon per restaurant figures, the chain’s yearly sales average of $4,500,000 (four million, five hundred thousand) per franchise location is twice that of McDonalds and four times that of its major chicken competitor, Kentucky Fried Chicken. And all this while being closed on Sundays, ever since the first boneless breast fillet sandwich was served to customers back in the year 1946. S. Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-Fil-A, was a born-again, Bible believing Baptist who taught the same Sunday School class (junior high boys) in the same congregation (First Baptist Church) for 55 years, until his death at age 93. One of the world’s richest men with a net worth $7 billion dollars, Cathy (“I don’t check my religion at the door”) determined that all of his employees would be given Sundays off for four reasons: to spend time with their family, to worship and renew their spirit, to fellowship with their friends, and to rest and recharge their batteries. This Lord’s-day off policy now costs the company $500 million dollars annually in sales, but Cathy said it was “the best business decision I ever made”. And the figures seem to back him up. For instance, in the 72-year history of the company, not once have they sold less chicken sandwiches than the year before. And their employee turn-over rate is just 3%, versus the fast-food average of 50%. Also, 75% of all current Chick-Fil-A franchise owners started out as young people working at the restaurant’s counter. The philosophy of the nation’s largest private family-owned business (“It’s not about being closed Sundays, it’s all about how well we do on the other six days of the week”) has consistently placed Chick-Fil-A number one in customer satisfaction surveys for: cleanliness, courtesy, and speed of service.
The bottom line? We read in II Samuel 2:30 (…for them that honour me I will honour…). And as Chick-Fil-A has shown, you can take that to the bank.
