Cecil B. DeMille, the famed Hollywood film-maker,had already made a name for himself as the director of a number of money-making movies at the box office, So DeMille decided he would repay his loyal audiences theatre ticket-buying support, by letting them choose his next production. Cecil placed an ad in newspapers across the country announcing the contest – whoever’s idea was chosen would receive $1,000 cash($10,000 today). The letters came pouring in and the winner was a man by the name of F.C. Nelson (a manufacturer of lubricating oil) who lived in Lansing, Michigan. And Mr. Nelson’s suggestion? The Ten Commandments (the rest, as is said, is history).
